Project_

This project aims to reinvent the Theremin, transforming it into a dynamic instrument suited for high-energy live performances and modern music production.

Process_

The Theremin, known for its eerie, ethereal sound, has remained largely unchanged since its invention. To adapt it for high-energy settings, a modernized approach focuses on enhancing responsiveness, stability, and integration with contemporary music production. Improved motion tracking allows for greater precision, while customizable sound modulation expands its versatility. By making it more intuitive and adaptable, the goal is to transform the Theremin from a niche, atmospheric instrument into a dynamic tool for live performance and electronic music

How can we channel the energy of a guitar player playing a solo into a Theremin?

What is a theremin?

The instrument that is played without touching

The theremin is one of the first electronic musical instruments, invented by Léon Theremin in the 1920s. It is unique because it is played without physical contact, using two antennas that sense hand movements: one controls pitch, and the other controls volume. The theremin produces an eerie, ethereal sound, often associated with science fiction films and experimental music. Its expressive, touchless playstyle makes it both a fascinating instrument and a challenge to master.

Pitch Antenna

2 Modes

Volume Antenna

Stationary

The first mode, Stationary Mode, allows the Theremin to be played like a traditional Theremin, maintaining its classic touchless control. The newly designed wave antenna enables the instrument to produce multiple sounds simultaneously, expanding its sonic capabilities.

On the Move

The second mode, On-the-Go Mode, allows the pitch antenna to detach from the theremin’s base, transforming it into a standalone instrument. While this mode limits the sound to a single voice, it grants the performer full mobility, enabling dynamic stage movement while maintaining pitch control.

Theramove // Sound Saber

The Sound Saber is a modern, standalone theremin that allows performers to move freely across the stage while playing. One hand holds the pitch antenna, while the other controls the sound, giving the player full mobility and dynamic control. By detaching from the traditional base, this device transforms the classic theremin experience into an intuitive, motion-based instrument perfect for high-energy performances. The Sound Saber combines the unique sound of a theremin with the freedom and expression of live movement.
